McLaren McL 6GT Brings Back a True Manual Gearbox
A retro wedge honouring Bruce McLaren's unbuilt M6GT road car previews an exclusive V8 model due in 2028.
McLaren has revealed the McL 6GT, a retro-styled limited-edition supercar concept that pays homage to the M6GT, the road-going coupe Bruce McLaren hoped to build from his M6A Can-Am racer. That project never reached production, with only a handful of prototypes made. A production version of the new car is due in 2028.
The headline is the gearbox. The 6GT uses a six-speed manual, McLaren's first since the F1, though further technical details remain under wraps. The company describes a lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque, V8 combustion power and rear-wheel drive, but has not released output figures or pricing, and production numbers are unconfirmed.
The design is unlike any modern McLaren, with wedge proportions, a Kammback tail, a 1960s-style glasshouse, straked sills and stacked headlamps. A racing-loop motif repeats from the taillights to the exhaust tips, vents and steering wheel, while the cabin pairs a slim portrait touchscreen with bespoke switchgear and a digital cluster.
McLaren says the car establishes a new, highly exclusive tier of supercar rather than previewing future styling. It was shown privately to customers at McLaren House during Monterey Car Week, alongside a newly built M6GT made from the original drawings.
